What does career mean to you? Are you looking for a job? A longer term direction? Or, are you thinking about all the different parts of your life and how they fit together?
Each of these ideas is an example of a definition of career.
Careers have historically been, and still are today, about getting a job and having a series of jobs over the years. Another view of a career is that of ‘a calling.’ A calling is often associated with being a teacher, a doctor, or an artist.
More recently, the idea of career has broadened to a lifestyle concept that involves work, learning and leisure across the lifespan (Career Industry Council of Australia, 2022).
Careers are no longer seen as limited to paid work and can be about new and ongoing possibilities across your life areas.
Why is it important what career means to you?
Well, for me, it matters because how you view a career, will be related to why you are seeking out career counselling or coaching.
If you’d like to focus on finding your next job - then we could focus on job searching, resumes, applications and interview preparation.
If you’re considering your overall career direction and thinking about family, work, learning, hobbies, passions and how a career plan would fit together - then we can work together on exploring career ideas and career decision making.
Bright Careers offers career counselling and job search coaching services tailored to what you are looking for.
